i'm a leader.. one last time

Guess what? This is my last post for classes. YAY! I was getting tired of capitalizing my letters. (Maybe that's something I should get used to though, huh?) Today is my last day of my M/W classes and tomorrow I have one class left until I get to enjoy finals (sarcastic font.. Alex please be reading..), but then that means home is just around the corner. I really can't wait. But I guess I should get to the point, huh?

This past week leadership was focused on networking. I love this topic. I feel like networking was my forte in high school; and learning about it more gave me some thoughts of how it can be my forte in college, too. In high school I knew so many random people. Why? Well, I was a Facebook creep- let's be real. But I also was involved, and that involvement took me to meet others who were involved. Most of my networking I accredit to student council, HOBY, and FBLA. Statewide conferences were great for bouncing off ideas from other students and some even turned from acquaintances to friends. Those conferences were some of my fondest high school memories, but it was also a part of high school that I had forgotten while here at BYU.
During our lab Monday I thought about them more as I visited with Tess Hilmo. To be honest the lab wasn't what I expected. I thought we would be rotating amongst the professionals that were there, so I just sat down at the first available chair. That chair was at Tess's table. She is an published author- very cool, but not something that interests me for my future. As I noticed we would not be switching tables at all, I felt like I had not put myself in a place to get as much as I could out of this lab. However, she talked a lot about the writing/author conferences she goes to and how that is a great networking tool. This reminded me of the conferences I went to in high school and all of the great contacts I have because of it.
Many say BYU and members of the LDS church make for a very small world. It's SO true. Here's a funny story that deals with BYU and my high school conference:
Through state student council conventions I made a friend, Kate. We texted almost regularly, especially when anything was upcoming for student council or FBLA (which we were both in). Before FBLA spring conference she told me she had a friend she wanted me to meet from her school that she thought I would like. She told me a little bit about him, but then said one thing, "But there is one kinda weird thing about him... He's Mormon." I couldn't help but laugh. Apparently Kate didn't know I was Mormon, too. This made me even more excited to meet him, as I was the only member at my school. Long story short, we briefly met at FBLA but after high school he went to BYU and then on his mission and that was about the end of Trevor. Well guess what? Trevor is back and is now living at the same apartment complex as me. Oh BYU. :)
I'm glad that one of my "contacts" from high school networking carried onto my college experience, but I look forward to making more contacts while here at BYU. The people at BYU are so friendly and the alum are so willing to help, so I don't see it being too difficult. This networking will open doors for internships, jobs and careers.

the year of 'perfect ten' in review- day five.

the most important ten of 2010 #5

i planned some pretty great events (if i do say so myself)

in high school student council was my thing. i tried sports, they were okay. i did the whole band/ choir thing, it was okay. but student council. student council worked for me. i'm kinda bossy, so maybe that's why. but i like planning things, creating hype, themes, advertising, etc.
of my senior year stuco activities i was involved with, i had a couple i was most proud of. first was the beginning of "super fan night." i quit basketball at the beginning of the year and it allowed me to focus on other things, like student council of course. i planned dv's first super fan night, complete with people dressing insane (even got someone wearing a panther suit), a cheer off, prizes, and an amazing super fan cape for the winner. it was quite a fun night. it brought great attendance to the game against our rival and was a success.
then there was "caring of coach". this was an event with much more meaning. for the more info go to this site and for the story go here. it was a fundraiser for our head football coach and it was a great community event. we raised over $15,000 dollars. this far exceeded expectations, as well as the turnout. it made me LOVE my community. i already did, but seriously. those people are amazing. the event had two parts. first was the bake sale and football game. the football game was local news anchors (who were great great help in advertising, gained more sponsors, etc) against the high school football players. then we headed to the fire hall were the firefighters cooked us dinner. the line was out the door and down the street. amazing amazing amazing! it made me want to cry, but i had too much more to do :) then where the fire engines usually are kept we had a silent auction with fabulous items, all donated from my incredible community. we also had a magician. so. in one night we raised $15,000. and we were SO HAPPY. sadly, that only made a dent in the funds mr. jund needs for his treatment and the things he needs to live with his condition. (MS) nonetheless, it really brought the community together and really made me appreciate the great people i grew up around.
last but not least was my graduation party. i really cannot take much of the credit this event, my mom did most of it, with the help of some great family friends. but i thought it was pretty fun :) i'll do a little run through for you. you walk to my backyard. the weather was gorgeous! there were tables and chairs set up, a tent with tables in it as well. in the tent was a tv with a slideshow that my good friend elizabeth made that took you through my life. and down the middle of the tables was a really cute fabric and pictures.. idk really how to explain it was it was like party planner perfect. then on the side of the tent (outside) were two tables. one had a box for cards, with a senior picture and then a bulletin board that people put little notes for me on. on the other table was just various awards and an BYU things i made, and then my "30 favorite things" in a book, scrapbook style. this took me foreverrrr but it was worth it.

anyways i know this is long and you probably didn't read it all. there you go. ps i want to be a party planner.
and day six will go with seven tomorrow :)

Red and Pink

Red and Pink bring many great things such as..

Also in the works for this month is

This is a benefit dinner and silent auction our HS Student Council is organizing with the help of the local fire department, news station, Coke bottling company, etc. Our football coach has a serious medical condition that requires expensive medical treatment.
Coach Jund is just a teacher, as well as his wife. They have young childern, and not to mention South Dakota is ranked last based on teacher salary. This does not make for an easy ride.

The event is on a Sunday, making it difficult for me, so I decided my contribution would be through advertising. Facebook groups, mass emails, flyers, and banners are all in the works.

Student Council is something that has really kept me sane through these four years. I love putting all I've got into a project and getting a worthwhile outcome. It definitely allows for a sense of accomplishment and its great to see our school and community come together for events like this.

Stay Beautiful;; Ashley Ann.
