i'm a leader: part nine

This week in leadership was all about motivating others. LaNae Valentine from Women's Services and Resources came to talk to us about how she motivates others. She deals with people who have good reasons to be unmotivated and have went through rough situations that would make me a pessimist. It was good to hear how she handles it and is able to help others. My favorite class this week, however, was our lab. We all took upon ourselves the roles of great world leaders, past and present. Some were crazy, some didn't motivate others to do good, and some are great examples of what we should be. I was Julie Beck, President of the Relief Society. I am so grateful I got her name. First of all, I didn't have to be a psyco and everyone always knew I was right (kidding, but kind of not. Who can argue with Sister Beck?). Also, I learned a lot from spending a half hour in her shoes.
Sister Beck wasn't the most well- known leader. Most of the other leaders didn't know a lot about her or her organization, but we all can learn from her. Qualities that I enjoyed including in my discussions with other leaders were her humility, reliance on prayer and the Spirit, and genuine care of those she leads. It was so easy to "be her" for a class period, but why is it so hard to follow her example? This activity made me think it's not! I obviously know what I need to do to be more like her and how she would approach problems, so I just need to apply that knowledge. So.. that's the plan :)

Random thoughts from the lab you might enjoy:
-Sister Beck got asked what she thought about the NBA lockout.. don't worry she loves her basketball and was very concerned. The center of the problem? Greed. Just play ball boys.
-She had a hard time being around some leaders who just wanted to kill or put those they lead in jail.
-She was voted the best leader! Woohoo!
