This week in lab and lecture we talked about being an ethical leader. We were given many tough situations of "what would you do?" which essentially are like playing a very intense game of "would you rather..". I have converted from thinking ethics are black and white to being a believer in grey. Sometimes the right choice is not only tough but harmful to your values or others. I think a downfall can be when you believe more in the letter of the law than the essence of the law, and this is what has been tripping me up. We were given a list full of values and asked which were most important to us. Here is what I decided..
My Top Values:
1- Religion and my relationship with my Heavenly Father
2- Family
3- Friends
4- Integrity
5- Consistancy
6- Excellence
7- Convictions
8- Honesty
Some of the first choices are obvious, but one that is especially true and may surprise people is consistency. I believe, or at least hope, that when I make a decision on what my convictions are I stick to them. Some might say I'm just stubborn, which is true; but an example is that I do my best to always stick to my word, even if it means I take a hit for it. Based on my values I was able to make a code of ethics that I can follow when I get out of the "BYU Bubble" and have tough decisions.
Personal Code of Ethics:
I will be upfront with my employers and leaders with my values.
I will keep an eternal perspective on my decisions.
I will not sacrifice my integrity for advancement.
I will consider all options and think them through before making any decisions.
I will remember the effect my choices has on others.
I will deal with ethics problems right away, before they get worse.
I just thought I'd let you know that I love reading your blog! It is always so cute and fun. Also, this was a great post!
